"Kedah orders three picnic spots closed"
"ALOR SETAR: Three popular picnic spots in Kedah have been ordered to close temporarily in the wake of an outbreak of Leptospirosis (rat urine disease) at several recreational areas in the state.
The three spots are Puncak Janing in Kuala Nerang, Lata Bayu in Baling and Bukit Wang in Kubang Pasu.
Kedah health director Dr Marzukhi Md Isa said so far, one person had died because of the disease while four others were confirmed to have contracted it.
“The victim who died was in his 30s and was a Penang Health Department employee. He had come for a picnic at Lata Bayu with two friends, who also contracted the disease and are now receiving treatment at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital,” he told reporters here yesterday.
He said the other two patients contracted the disease at Puncak Janing and were now being treated at the Kuala Nerang Hospital.
He added that the department was taking all measures necessary to counter the disease and advised the public not to take their water from hill streams.
In Kuantan, Pahang Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the melioidosis and leptospirosis outbreak in Maran had been contained.
He said this was because the incubation period for the disease had passed the stipulated 28-day mark.
“During this period, no new cases involving the melioidosis and leptospirosis bacteria was reported.
“However, the Lubuk Yu waterfall is still closed to visitors until a report by the technical committee on disaster management is completed,” he said after launching the state-level World Health Day celebrations in Wisma Belia here on Tuesday.
Hoh said the death toll from the Lubuk Yu incident stood at seven.
The Lubuk Yu recreational area has been closed to the public since July 10 after 89 people who took part in a search and rescue operation between June 26 and June 30, were diagnosed with leptospirosis infection (transmitted by rat urine).
Hoh said there were 22 cases of suspected melioidosis and leptospirosis bacteria infection as of Tuesday. — Bernama"
